Magic Under the Stars: Recapping Our First "Flashlights & Fireflies" Night Walk

There's something truly magical about watching a native garden transition from day to night. As the sun sets, the daytime buzz of bees and butterflies gives way to an entirely different world of nocturnal wonder- one filled with soft glows, fluttering moths, and the quiet beauty of evening blooms.

We recently gathered for our free, family-friendly "Flashlight & Fireflies" Nighttime Garden Walk, and it was an evening packed with discovery, connection, and plenty of nighttime magic!

Armed with flashlights, magnifying glasses, and a shared curiosity, families joined us in the Discovery Meadow to see what wakes up when the sun goes down.

  • The Mission of Patchwork Pathways: We opened the night sharing how every garden, pocket habitat, and native plant patch creates vital stepping stones for our local wildlife. Connecting these spaces is at the heart of our community corridor efforts!

  • Night-Blooming Natives & Their Pollinators: We explored native plants that save their best work for the evening- releasing scents and opening blooms specifically designed to attract nighttime pollinators like moths and beetles.

  • The Mothing Station: One of the biggest highlights of the night! We set up a simple sheet and light station, giving everyone an up-close look at the stunning diversity of local moths that usually fly under the radar.

  • Monarch Egg Hunt: Magnifying glasses came in handy as kids and parents inspected the undersides of milkweed leaves, hunting for tiny, pinhead-sized monarch eggs and learning how vital milkweed remains around the clock.

We loved seeing the excitement in every young explorer's eyes as they made new discoveries. To keep the curiosity going at home, every attendee left with:

  • Practical printed resources to help identify night-blooming plants and nocturnal pollinators in their own backyards.

  • Glow sticks to light their way through the evening.

  • Mini magnifying glasses for future backyard bug hunts.

  • Firefly-themed stickers as a keepsake from the night.

Events like "Flashlights & Fireflies" remind us just how much life exists in our native spaces if we take a moment to pause, grab a flashlight, and look a little closer.

Thank you so much to every family who joined us, brought their bright energy, and made the night so special. Keep an eye out for our upcoming community events, seed collection days, and habitat workshops!

Until next time - stay wild, stay curious.
