August 2026, Patchwork Pathways WI gathered nature lovers, families, and conservationists for a morning dedicated to one of North America's most iconic travelers: the monarch butterfly.

Our event, "Connecting Habitats, Protecting Migration," focused on how local habitat restoration directly supports the incredible journey of monarchs. Through four interactive stations, attendees explored the delicate life cycle of these insects and learned how our community can work together to safeguard their passage.

Station Highlights

The Monarch Life Cycle

Visitors got an up-close look at the remarkable transformation from egg to larva (caterpillar), chrysalis, and adult (butterfly). We explored the vital role of native milkweed- the sole food source for monarch caterpillars- and discussed how planting it in local gardens provides crucial nursery space.

The Great Migration

Participants mapped out the astonishing multi-generational journey monarchs take every year, traveling up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the Northern U.S. down to the oyamel fir forests of central Mexico. This station highlighted why unbroken corridors of nectar-rich native flowers are essential for fueling their flight.

Citizen Science in Action

Attendees learned how simple, everyday observations can fuel global conservation efforts. We demonstrated how to participate in monarch testing & tagging programs and monitor local populations, empowering community members to become active contributors to scientific research.

The Patchwork Action Zone

Here, education turned into direct impact. Guests took home native, locally harvested seed packets, learned how to build pesticide-free pollinator patches, and signed up to help build connected green corridors across Wisconsin.

Building the Patchwork

No single backyard can save a species, but a network of connected habitats can. By converting even small patches of lawn into native plant havens, we create a living quilt of safe stops for monarchs and other essential pollinators.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, and pledged to plant for pollinators this season. Together, we are ensuring that future generations of monarchs always find a path home.
